This isn’t just an album; it’s an exhausting, beautiful, and occasionally pretentious ride. If his previous work was a slow-burn descent into melancholy, Vox Occulta is the moment he decides to decorate the basement with velvet curtains and dozens of candles on wrought-iron stands.

The record fits into the broader Leprous evolution by doubling down on the theatricality that has been creeping into their sound since The Congregation. However, where the band often favors a certain sleek, polished minimalism, Solberg solo is a maximalist. He isn’t just leaning into his falsetto; he’s essentially living there now, claiming squatter’s rights on the highest notes humanly possible. It’s an album that bridges the gap between high-brow avant-garde and the kind of dramatic tension usually reserved for a protagonist staring into a rain-slicked window in a movie trailer.

Side Note: Rather than seeing his solo work as a threat to Leprous, he views it as a psychological necessity. He has admitted that if he does the solo project for too long, he gets bored; if he does Leprous for too long, he gets bored. The solo records act as a “liberating” release valve, allowing him to explore things—like the “schizophrenic” genre-hopping of his debut or the orchestral maximalism here—that wouldn’t necessarily fit the current evolution of the band.

While the album is generally “weird” by the standards of anyone who enjoys a catchy chorus, “Stella Mortua” takes the prize for the most bafflingly brilliant track. The song earns its badge through its stubborn refusal to choose a lane between lush orchestration and jagged progressive metal, opening with strings that sound like they belong in a tragic 19th-century opera. Just as you’re settling into your theater seat, a syncopated, low-tuned riff arrives to kick the chair out from under you. Einar navigates this mix with his signature falsetto, making the transition between “crying in a cathedral” and “screaming at a circuit board” feel surprisingly—and concerningly—natural.

On this latest outing, Les Claypool’s trademark rubber-band bass lines and Sean Lennon’s ethereal, silver-screen vocals have moved past the initial phase of polite collaboration. They are no longer just two eccentric neighbors trading wine-making tips; they are now a singular, two-headed organism operating with a shared, feverish internal logic. The record manages to feel both ancient and futuristic, like a prog-rock relic unearthed from a newly discovered Martian dig site.

The evolution of the band is most evident in their mastery of atmosphere. Les has significantly dialed back the slap-heavy aggression of his youth (not completely, though… Les is still Les), opting instead for a subterranean, driving thrum that provides a dark foundation for Sean’s intricate guitar work and Mellotron textures. While their debut was a swirling homage to 60s psych and South of Reality leaned into more structured space-rock, Parrot-Ox finds the duo embracing a certain “maximalist minimalism.” They’ve stripped away some of the more self-indulgent jamming in favor of tighter, more sinister grooves that demand your attention before dropping some of their most biting social commentary on tracks like “WAP (What a Predicament)” and “Troll Bait”.

While the majority of the record offers great candidates for a Weird Music Wednesday post, “Meat Machines” serves as the album’s centerpiece and is the album’s most listenable achievement (NOT a coincidence). Built upon a mechanical, repetitive bass motif that mirrors the lyrical themes of biological automation, it achieves a rare balance: it is intellectually demanding while remaining rhythmically accessible. Lennon’s vocal performance on this track is particularly striking, utilizing a dry, detached delivery that contrasts beautifully with the warm, bubbling chaos of the instrumentation. The bridge sections move away from the traditional verse-chorus structure, opting instead for a spiraling progression that showcases the duo’s telepathic musical chemistry. In “Meat Machines,” the band successfully connects the dots between 1970s Canterbury prog and modern experimentalism, wrapping it all in a radio-friendly package, proving that their partnership has matured into one of the most vital forces in contemporary rock.

With their latest release, Peaches!, The Black Keys continue their decade-long journey of reconciling their raw, garage-rock origins with their status as elder statesmen of the modern rock landscape. Following a period defined by high-concept production and psychedelic detours, this record manages to be both breezy and swampy, a difficult tightrope walk that suggests the duo has reached that comfortable middle age where they can use all the things they’ve learned over the years to create their sound without feeling the need to pick a specific lane. The songwriting is tighter and the arrangements more disciplined, suggesting a duo that has moved past trying to be something they’re not to sustain momentum.

Evolutionarily speaking, Peaches! is the spiritual successor to the “back-to-basics” grit of Delta Kream, but with the pop sensibilities of the El Camino era tucked neatly into its back pocket. While their mid-career work occasionally felt like it was wearing a suit that was just a bit too tight, this album fits like a pre-shrunk vintage tee. It signals a shift away from specific incarnations of their sound, choosing instead to integrate those influences into a cohesive, contemporary identity... a sound that is unapologetically analog and suspiciously infectious (not to mention, absolutely DRIPPING in reverb).

For me, the undisputed centerpiece of the album is “She Does It Right.” While the record is consistent in its quality, this track stands out as the most vital song on the project, primarily because it is the perfect amalgam of all the tools the band has at their disposal. The song is anchored by a thick blanket of bass over which a sharp, staccato guitar figure demands attention, both of which provide a rhythmic skeleton for Auerbach to deliver one of his most convincing and urgent vocal performances in years. The psychedelic elements are still present with the organ runs, slide guitar, and gospel-style background vocals but mixed so impeccably into the track that they have a subliminal effect on how the song is perceived without it being obvious. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to drive slightly over the speed limit toward a destination that definitely serves cheap beer.

Fifty years after its April 1976 release, Rastaman Vibration stands as a pivotal monument in the landscape of 20th-century music. While Catch a Fire introduced the world to the “rebel music” from the island nation of Jamaica and Exodus would later solidify his status as a global prophet, Rastaman Vibration was the album that truly broke Bob Marley and the Wailers in the United States, peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200.

When Rastaman Vibration hit the shelves in late April, the Billboard 200 was a “Who’s Who” of rock legends. The Eagles were dominating with Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) and Peter Frampton was in the middle of his cultural takeover with Frampton Comes Alive!. Paul McCartney’s Wings had just released At the Speed of Sound and Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones were also releasing major works that same month (Presence and Black and Blue respectively).

In a sea of double-live albums and high-gloss production, Rastaman Vibration was an anomaly. While the U.S. was beginning its obsession with the four-on-the-floor beat of Disco, Marley offered the “One Drop.” It was danceable, but the themes were heavy. It lacked the escapism of disco; instead of “The Hustle,” Marley was singing about the “Rat Race.”

1976 was also the American Bicentennial—a year of loud, patriotic celebration. Marley arrived at the party with an album wrapped in burlap-textured/burlap-print cover art, singing about the downfall of Babylon and the divinity of Haile Selassie. To many young Americans, this felt more “authentic” than the increasingly corporate rock of the era.

To further understand the impact of Rastaman Vibration, one must also look at the “Marley Effect” that was sweeping through Western rock royalty in the mid-1970s. This wasn’t just a musical trend; it was a total recalibration of the pop music compass. Marley was no longer a niche curiosity in the West, largely thanks to Eric Clapton’s 1974 cover of “I Shot the Sheriff.” Clapton’s version went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, effectively “translating” reggae’s syncopated language for American rock audiences.

However, while Clapton opened the door, Marley’s increasing popularity among other Western giants gave him true peer status. Keith Richards became an early and vocal disciple, often seen in the front row of Marley’s London shows. The Stones eventually signed former-Wailer Peter Tosh to their own label, but it was Marley’s spiritual gravity that they most admired.

Sir Paul McCartney was so enamored with the “rebel music” that he began incorporating simplified reggae rhythms into his own work (most notably in “C Moon”). Also, in the UK, Marley became an honorary “Godfather of Punk.” Bands like The Clash and The Slits looked to Rastaman Vibration as a blueprint for political defiance. Marley responded to this mutual respect with the track “Punky Reggae Party,” bridging the gap between Kingston and London’s subcultures,

By the mid-70s, the Wailers weren’t just a backing band; they were a precision-engineered musical machine, capable of delivering a spiritual message with the power of a rock stadium act. While Bob was the face and the voice, the sheer musicianship of the Wailers during the Rastaman Vibration era reached a level of tightness that few rock bands could match. At the heart of this were the Barrett Brothers, arguably the most influential rhythm section in reggae history.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett didn’t just play bass lines; he composed melodic foundations. On tracks like album opener “Positive Vibration,” his bass is the “lead” instrument, providing a deep, rolling pulse that allows Marley’s vocals to float. He was the musical director for the band, responsible for the sophisticated arrangements that made the record feel modern and hi-fi.

Family Man’s brother, Carlton Barrett, is widely credited with perfecting the “One Drop” drumming style. His signature was the cracking “sidestick” of the snare on the third beat of the measure, leaving the first beat empty—a rhythmic reversal that gave the album its hypnotic, swinging feel. His hi-hat work on Rastaman Vibration is particularly intricate, acting as the metronome for a world that was suddenly learning to dance on the “off-beat.”

The album also showcased a deliberate, world-class musical expansion… Al Anderson, an American addition to the band, brought a blues-rock “sting” to the tracks. His solos on “Roots, Rock, Reggae” were the bridge for American listeners—they heard a guitar tone they recognized (similar enough to Hendrix or Clapton) while the songs remain rooted in Jamaican culture.

This was also the album where the synthesizer truly entered the Wailers‘ vocabulary. Tyrone Downie used the Hammond organ, Clavinet and early synths to add a “bubbly,” modern texture that made the record sound competitive with the soul and R&B coming out of Philadelphia and Detroit at the time.

In recognition of the importance of this specific group of musicians, Rastaman Vibration was the first Marley album to credit individual band members for songwriting—a move by Bob to ensure his brothers in the band received royalties and credit for their immense contributions to the “Marley sound.”

Working at Harry J Studios in Jamaica and mixing in Miami, the production on this record is notably “fatter” and more polished than its predecessors. The addition of backing vocals from Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths (aka The I-Threes) provided a soulful, gospel-inflected backdrop that smoothed out the rough edges of Marley’s vocals, making the message more palatable to a global audience. The interplay between Earl “Chinna” Smith’s rhythm guitar and Al Anderson’s rock-influenced leads created a hybrid sound that further bridged the gap between traditional reggae and Western FM radio.

Retrospectively, Rastaman Vibration is perhaps Marley’s most overtly political and religious statement. It served as a manifesto for the Rastafarian faith during a period of intense political turmoil in Jamaica.

The centerpiece of the album, “War,” is a literal transcription of Haile Selassie I’s 1963 speech to the United Nations. Fifty years on, the lyrics remain a hauntingly accurate diagnostic tool for global inequality:

“Until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes… Me say war”

While “War” dealt with the macro-political, tracks like “Johnny Was” and “Rat Race” dealt with the micro—the everyday violence and political manipulation occurring in the ghettos of Trenchtown. This balance between the spiritual and the visceral is what gave the album its “vibration.”

Half a century later, Rastaman Vibration is more than just a collection of reggae songs; it is the moment Bob Marley became a cultural diplomat. It was on the tour for this album that the iconic imagery of Marley—dreadlocks flying, eyes closed in spiritual fervor—was burned into the global consciousness.

It remains a vital document of a man who refused to separate his art from his activism. In an era of digital disconnection, the “Positive Vibration” Marley sang about in 1976 feels less like a relic of the past and more like a necessary prescription for the future.

With the release of Print, London-based artist Kilú has finally moved past the “promising single” phase of their career and into the realm of the fully realized, moody manifesto. For those who have been following the evolution from the early, raw bedroom-pop sketches like “too afraid” to the more cinematic polish of “afraid,” this seven-track collection feels like the logical conclusion of a three-year experiment in sonic vulnerability. Kilú has traded some of the lo-fi fuzz for a wider, more atmospheric lens, resulting in a record that sounds less like a diary entry and more like a noir art film directed by a very sad A24 cinematographer.

The album marks a significant shift in Kilú’s trajectory, leaning harder into the “cinematic” tag they’ve been chasing. If their previous singles were brief glimpses into a rainy Hackney afternoon, Print is the whole storm. The production is denser, utilizing a blend of organic textures and digital glitchiness that places them firmly in the lineage of artists like Finneas or Joji, but with a distinctly British, grit-under-the-fingernails sensibility. It is an evolution of scale; the emotions haven’t changed, but the room they’re being shouted in has gotten much larger and the acoustics much better.

Side Note: It’s almost impossible to discuss Print without addressing the “Subterranean Homesick Alien” in the room: the unavoidable, almost gravitational pull of Radiohead on this collection of songs. Kilú has never been particularly shy about this; in fact, he’s gone on record citing In Rainbows as a foundational religious text for his creative process. But as any music fan knows, there is a very thin, very blurry line between being “inspired by” and “carbon copy.” To be fair, calling a moody indie artist “Radiohead-adjacent” is the ultimate music critic cliché, but Kilu makes it hard to avoid. However, I think he escapes the “rip-off” allegations through his sheer commitment to the bit and willingness to create new music in this style which Radiohead doesn’t seem to be interested in at the moment.

While the album is a cohesive unit, “marry me to dopamine” stands out. It features the most infectious melody on the record, balancing a frantic, chemical urgency with Kilú’s signature vocal weariness. While tracks like “verden” or “epic” lean heavily into atmosphere, “marry me to dopamine” manages to be both a crushing existential crisis and something you could reasonably play in a car without your passengers asking if you’re okay. It perfectly encapsulates the Kilú ethos—marrying high-concept, self-aware titles with production that feels like it’s vibrating at the edge of a breakdown.

With the release of The World Is To Dig, They Might Be Giants continue their decades-long project of being the smartest, most anxious people in the room. This record feels less like a late-career victory lap and more like a frantic excavation of the band’s own psyche. John Linnell and John Flansburgh have traded the accordion-heavy whimsy of their youth for a polished, slightly caffeinated brand of existential dread. It is an album that suggests the earth isn’t just something we walk on, but something we are destined to disappear into—accompanied, naturally, with a catchy brass section and a Major 7th chord.

In the grand arc of TMBG’s evolution, this record marks a shift from “quirky DIY experimenters” to “surgical architects of the bizarre.” They’ve traded the literal puppets for metaphorical ones, using high-end production to make their eccentricity feel even more jarring. The weirdness here, surprisingly, isn’t in the instrumentation—The majority of the record adheres to the “standard rock band” format—it’s in the band’s refusal to write a song about a standard human emotion without first filtering the perspective through a textbook on geology or a broken VCR.

The World Is To Dig proves that They Might Be Giants are still the reigning kings of the “uncomfortable truth you can hum along to.” They haven’t mellowed with age; they’ve just gotten better at hiding the thorns inside the melody. It fits into their evolution as a testament to their longevity—showing that even after forty years, they are still digging for something new. Confirming that even as they become elder statesmen of the indie scene, TMBG remain committed to the idea that the world is a strange, vibrating place where the only logical response is to write a two-minute song about it and then never explain yourself.

While the album offers plenty of competition, “Character Flaw” is the weirdest—and therefore best—offering for Weird Music Wednesday. It is a song that manages to make the concept of personality feel like a structural engineering failure. Most bands write about flaws with a sense of “woe is me” romanticism. TMBG approaches a character flaw as if they are describing an inevitable hairline fracture in a load-bearing wall. The track employs a jittery, staccato tempo that feels like a nervous tic set to music. It doesn’t flow so much as it spasms, capturing the exact sensation of a social interaction going south in real-time. taking the most internal, private anxieties and blasts them through a Technicolor horn section. It makes the listener feel seen, but in the way a security camera sees an unconscious nose pick.

It’s an album that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a series of high-end blueprints for soundscapes that shouldn’t work, yet somehow lock together with the precision of a German sedan.

The band’s evolution here is marked by a refusal to age gracefully in the traditional “acoustic album” sense. Instead, Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Kellii Scott have leaned further into their roles as sonic mathematicians. The fuzz is still there, but it’s curated; the gloom is present, but it’s been run through a proprietary filter that makes existential dread sound surprisingly melodic. They’ve swapped the raw, bleeding edges of their youth for a sophisticated mastery of mid-tempo tension, proving that you don’t need to scream to be heavy—you just need the right frequency to make the listener’s floorboards vibrate.

While the album is remarkably consistent, “A Way Down” asserts itself as the clear alpha of the tracklist. It captures the quintessential Failure paradox: it feels both infinitely vast and uncomfortably claustrophobic. The song centers on a signature Edwards bassline that feels like it’s slowly unscrewing itself from the floor. Andrews delivers his lines with a detached, observational cool that makes the descent described in the lyrics feel like an inevitably negative physics experiment outcome rather than a tragedy. The lyrics—lamenting “negative numbers” and “dead end deals”—provide a grounded, blue-collar contrast to the shimmering, psych-pop guitar work and awesome descending bass runs. It’s my favorite song on the record because it manages to be catchy without being cloying, and sentimental without losing its grit.

Released on May 2, 2006, Tool’s 10,000 Days arrived at a strange crossroads. It followed the era-defining Lateralus, a record so mathematically precise and spiritually focused that many fans felt Tool had reached the “final boss” level of progressive metal. Two decades later, 10,000 Days no longer sits in the shadow of its predecessor. Instead, it stands as the band’s most human, grounded, and visceral work—a bridge between the cosmic mathematics of their youth and the atmospheric mastery of their later years.

If Lateralus was an album about reaching outward toward the universe, 10,000 Days was about looking inward at the wreckage of reality. The transition was jarring for some in 2006. The band traded the clean, transcendent production of David Bottrill for a thicker, more “muscle-bound” sound, bringing in Evil Joe Barresi to capture a raw, almost tactile energy.

When 10,000 Days hit shelves in May 2006, the rock landscape was undergoing a massive identity crisis. The “Post-Grunge” boom of the early 2000s was fading into radio-friendly stagnation, and the “Garage Rock Revival” (led by The White Stripes and The Strokes) was already being eclipsed by the rise of Emo and Pop-Punk.

In this environment, Tool was an anomaly: a band that refused to make music for the burgeoning “digital download” era, instead releasing a physical package that required a set of built-in stereoscopic lenses to view 3D artwork by Alex Grey. This wasn’t just a gimmick; it was a cultural statement. They forced the listener to stay in the room, to hold the album art, and to engage with the music as a singular, 76-minute ritual (like music fans used to do back in the 70s and 80s).

Side Note: At the time of the album’s release, I was working at Yahoo! Music, and distinctly remember heading out to leisurely Friday lunch with a group of co-workers and forcing everyone to stop at Best Buy in Santa Monica, CA. so I could buy this album. It went straight into the car’s CD player and essentially became my exclusive soundtrack for months thereafter.

Despite being the antithesis of “radio-friendly,” 10,000 Days was a massive commercial juggernaut. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 564,000 copies in its first week. To put its dominance in perspective, other heavyweight releases it shared the charts with in May 2006 included Pearl Jam by Pearl Jam (also released on May 2nd), Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers (released May 9th), and Don’t Need to Whisper by Angels and Airwaves (released on May 23rd).

Rock radio at the time was also dominated by tracks like Nickelback’s “Animals” and the chart-topping emo anthems of Hawthorne Heights or Taking Back Sunday. Tool occupied a space that felt entirely separate from this “scene.” While other bands were trimming songs down to 3 minutes for iTunes, Tool’s “Vicarious” (7:06) and “The Pot” (6:21) became massive radio hits. They were the only band in the Top 10 that could force a mainstream DJ to play a 7-minute song about the “morbid curiosity” of the public.

2006 was the year Twitter launched and the year digital piracy (Limewire, BitTorrent) was at its peak. By this time, guitarist Adam Jones had fully integrated his background in special effects into the band’s identity. The artwork, featuring Alex Grey’s “Net of Beings,” moved Tool’s aesthetic away from the “body horror” of the 90s into “transcendental surrealism.” The physical CD case featured dual lenses that allowed fans to view the booklet in 3D. In a world that was beginning to shift toward low-bitrate MP3s and the early days of iTunes, this was a defiant statement on the importance of physical media as art.

Unlike Lateralus, which was almost universally worshipped, 10,000 Days actually split the critics in 2006. Some reviewers felt the album was too long or that the ambient interludes (like “Lipan Conjuring” or “Viginti Tres”) were “filler.” Others argued that Tool had finally perfected their sound. While the Red Hot Chili Peppers were leaning into funk-pop and Pearl Jam was returning to straight-ahead rock, Tool was pushing the boundaries of what Heavy Metal could be, blending avant-garde influences with progressive rock.

Musically, the album pushed the boundaries of “prog” further than their previous work. In “Rosetta Stoned,” drummer Danny Carey often plays in three different time signatures at once—his feet, left hand, and right hand all operating on different cycles. This wasn’t just technical showing off; it was used to mimic the frantic, hallucinogenic narrative of the lyrics, creating a sense of “controlled chaos.”

Songs like “Jambi” introduced a mechanical, churning precision that felt more like heavy machinery than a spiritual experience. Adam Jones’ use of the talk box and Justin Chancellor’s grinding bass tones gave the album a physical weight that Lateralus lacked.

The centerpiece of the album—the 17-minute odyssey of “Wings for Marie (Pt 1)” and “10,000 Days (Pt 2)”—marked a massive shift for Maynard James Keenan. He moved away from the cryptic, universal metaphors of “The Patient” or “Reflection” to tell a devastatingly literal story about the death of his mother, Judith Marie. It remains the most vulnerable moment in the band’s entire discography.

This album also marked a significant shift in Maynard James Keenan’s vocal approach. On Ænima, he was often screaming in rage; on Lateralus, he was chanting with a monk-like precision. On 10,000 Days, he utilized a more conversational, almost “spoken word” delivery in tracks like “The Pot” and “Rosetta Stoned,” before exploding into those signature long-held notes. “The Pot,” in particular, saw him using a higher register that felt almost “bluesy,” a departure from the grit of their early days.

Ultimately, the album is defined by its title. 10,000 days is approximately 27 years—the time Judith Marie Keenan spent paralyzed after a stroke before her death. This transformed Tool from a band that sang about grudges or “Prison Sex” into a band dealing with the very real, very human experience of watching a parent suffer. That groundedness gave the album a weight that has allowed it to age more gracefully than many other prog-metal records of the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just an exercise in odd time signatures; it was a requiem.

The album also produced some of their most enduring social critiques… “Vicarious” remains a chillingly accurate premonition of our modern obsession with tragedy-as-entertainment, a theme that has only become more relevant in the age of social media. “The Pot” provided a rare, groove-heavy moment of mainstream accessibility while delivering a scathing indictment of hypocrisy that became a staple of rock radio for the next twenty years. Now in hindsight, the record also acted as the bridge to their eventual 13-year silence before Fear Inoculum.

The album’s mood perfectly captured the mid-2000s zeitgeist. Following the 2004 re-election of George W. Bush and the deepening of the Iraq War, there was a cynical, heavy atmosphere in alternative culture. 10,000 Days leaned into this with tracks like “Right in Two” (a commentary on human divisiveness) and “The Pot” (a critique of political hypocrisy).

Compared to the optimistic “arena rock” of the time, 10,000 Days felt like a necessary, albeit grim, reality check. It was the “Thinking Person’s Rock Record” in an era of increasingly shallow pop-rock.

Twenty years on, 10,000 Days is no longer the “difficult follow-up.” It is the emotional anchor of Tool’s catalog. It proved that a band known for being cold and calculating could also be heartbreakingly human. It remains a master work of tension and release… a record that demands—and rewards—the kind of patience that is increasingly rare in the modern world.

Bob Schneider has spent the better part of three decades operating as Austin’s unofficial musical laureate, a man who switches genres as often as most people change their socks. With FAYM, Schneider manages to corral his scattershot brilliance into an album that captures him in a state of high-fidelity restlessness, blending the grit of his Scabs-era funk with the sensitive, Lonelyland crooner persona that has kept him in steady work since the turn of the millennium. In the grand architecture of his career, FAYM is confident, occasionally smart-aleck, and reinforces the idea that while he might never stay in one genre long enough to be pinned down, he’s always worth chasing.

If Bob Schneider’s previous discography is a series of meticulously curated museum exhibits, FAYM is the artist’s private studio—door unlocked, coffee stains on the sketches, and the smell of ozone in the air. This record departs from the more “traditional” production choices found on albums like I’m Good Now, Lonelyland or The Californian, where the edges were often sanded down to a radio-ready sheen. Instead, FAYM embraces a certain high-definition raw energy that makes it feel less like a planned studio product and more like a collection of songs born from an overwhelming burst of spontaneous creativity.

There is a sense of “first-thought, best-thought” urgency here. Where earlier records might have lushly-processed a vocal or buried a weird synth line in favor of a clean acoustic guitar, FAYM lets the oddities breathe. It’s experimental in a way that feels playful rather than academic. It’s as if Bob took the skeletal, unvarnished charm of his home recordings and, instead of stripping them down to rebuild them in a sterile studio, simply invited the band over to turn the knobs until the speakers shook. The production doesn’t try to hide the seams; it highlights them, giving the listener the voyeuristic thrill of hearing a song at the exact moment it figures out what it wants to be.

While the album is peppered with solid SOTD contenders, “When We Get To Heaven” is my pick from the 20-song track list. It’s the kind of track that reminds you why Schneider is so beloved in the first place. It balances a fairly simple and straight-forward track with his typically infectious, rhythmic vocal delivery, dripping in personality, like only he can pull off. The band hits a groove so deep it feels like they’ve extracted it from in-between ancient oil deposits. While other tracks might wallow in the noir macabre (“Bad Man” and “Murder” come to mind), this song takes that pervading grittiness of life and gives it a focus and destination.

With the release of COLORZ, Bessie and the Rainbowkids (Led by jazzer Russell Hall) have finally stopped flirting with chaos and decided to move in with it. For a band that started as a relatively polite soul-jazz-fusion outfit, this record marks a definitive pivot into a world of hyper-saturated textures and unpredictable song structures akin to a full-scale synth and guitar pedal laboratory explosion. It’s the sound of a group that has grown tired of being charming and is now much more interested in being overwhelming.

COLORZ is not an easy listen, nor is it trying to be. It is a loud, messy, and occasionally exhausting statement of intent. By leaning into their most eccentric impulses, Bessie and the Rainbowkids have moved past the “promising” stage of their career and into something far more volatile and interesting. It’s an album that proves the best way to see the full spectrum is to stop worrying about staying inside the lines.

This album jumps all over the place stylistically… I mean, is tri-polar a thing? This constant shifting is what makes the album’s evolution so distinct from their earlier work. In the past, a Bessie and the Rainbowkids record had a “vibe.” Now, each song has its own climate, its own gravity, and its own set of rules. They’ve moved away from the idea of a “band sound” and toward the idea of a “band playground,” where no two pieces of equipment are used the same way twice. It is an exhausting, brilliant, (and to the casual listener) irritating display of versatility.

While most of the album dances on the edge of reason, “TELL ME NOW!” is where the genius of the method is exposed. There are “weirder” songs on the record (“The Shadow Of Your Love” comes to mind), but none as weirdly listenable as this one. It opens with a distorted bass/tuba loop, transitions eventually into a frantic drum-and-bass workout, and features a bridge that consists almost entirely of Bessie whispering what sounds like a grocery list over a recording of a jazz combo warming up for a duet with a dial-up modem. Despite the sonic clutter (or maybe because of it), this track demands you change your emotional state every thirty seconds. It feels like a deliberate challenge to the listener’s patience, yet it remains strangely addictive right up until the song literally runs out of gas.

Skindred’s You Got This plays out like a high-energy manifesto from a band that has spent decades perfecting the art of the genre-clash. While many of their peers from the early 2000s have either drifted into legacy-act territory or abandoned their roots for a safer sound, Skindred remains stubbornly, gloriously themselves. This record serves as a testament to their survival, leaning heavily into a “positive mental attitude” aesthetic that feels both authentic and earned. It is a loud, proud, and rhythmic middle finger to anyone who thought ragga-metal was a passing phase, and continues their long-standing tradition of being the only band on the planet capable of making a room full of metalheads, goths, and unsuspecting bystanders engage in a synchronized “Newport Helicopter.”

The album marks a deliberate evolution toward a more polished, anthemic sound. While early records felt like a chaotic street brawl between dancehall and thrash, You Got This leans into the “stadium” side of their identity. The production is crisp, the hooks are massive, and the band has trimmed any experimental fat in favor of direct, punchy songwriting. They’ve successfully moved from the underground fringe into a space where their sound feels purpose-built for massive festival stages, yet they’ve managed to do so without losing the grit that got them this far.

You Got This feels like Skindred taking a victory lap. They know exactly who they are, and they’ve stopped apologizing for the fact that their music is as much about a good time as it is about heavy riffs. It’s an album that reminds us that even when the world feels like a dumpster fire, you can always count on Skindred to get the party started.

If this album is a graduate thesis in modern fusion, “Can I Get A” is the valedictorian. It is, quite simply, the best song on the record because it perfectly distills the Skindred DNA into a three-and-a-half-minute shot of pure adrenaline. While other tracks might flirt with radio-rock or deeper reggae grooves, “Can I Get A” captures the specific brand of “heavy-yet-danceable” that no other band can replicate without looking silly. Benji Webbe shifts from his signature rasp to a rhythmic flow that commands the listener to move, proving he remains one of the most charismatic frontmen in the game. It’s a song designed for participation. It doesn’t just ask for your attention; it demands a response, making it the undeniable centerpiece of the album’s “don’t worry, Mon… we got the party right ‘ere” mission statement.

Joe Jackson has spent the better part of five decades treating the “pop star” label like an ill-fitting suit he’s constantly trying to have tailored—or, more often, burned. His latest offering, Hope and Fury, finds the 71-year-old enfant terrible in a remarkably focused state. It is a record that manages to be both a summation of his various lives (the pub-rocker, the salsa-lover, the jazz snob) and a sharp, contemporary elbow to the ribs of a world he finds increasingly exhausting.

The album serves as a spiritual bridge between the neon-lit New York nights of 1982’s Night and Day and the gritty, rain-slicked Portsmouth streets of his youth. For those who found his recent detour into the (ugh) “Max Champion” music hall persona a bit like watching your uncle perform a one-man show in a Victorian wig (double-ugh), Hope and Fury is a welcome return to form. It reunites him with his most reliable foil, bassist Graham Maby, whose lines are still as punchy and propulsive as they were in 1979. Jackson is no longer trying to prove he can write a symphony or a musical; he’s simply writing rock songs again, and the result is this “Bicoastal LatinJazzFunkRock” cocktail that goes down smooth but leaves a bracing aftertaste.

In the grand arc of his career, Hope and Fury feels like an artist finally settling into his own skin without losing his edge. He hasn’t mellowed so much as he has sharpened his tools. The record doesn’t have the frantic, “look-at-me” energy of Look Sharp!, nor the breathless romanticism of Body and Soul. Instead, it reflects a man who has realized that if you wait long enough, everything you once hated becomes vintage, and everything you once loved becomes a classic.

While the album is peppered with biting social commentary—notably the anti-nostalgic “Welcome to Burning-by-Sea” and “I’m Not Sorry”—it is “The Face” that emerges for me as the record’s high-point. Musically, it is pure Jacksonian bliss, leaning heavily into his love for the cool, sophisticated jazz-pop of Steely Dan. The arrangement employs just enough restraint to carve out space for a swinging, syncopated rhythm section that provides a trampoline for Jackson’s crisp piano stabs and Teddy Kumpel’s fluid guitar work. In a track list that occasionally leans into the “get off my lawn” energy of an old man who has seen too many pier pavilions close down, “The Face” feels light, observational, and musically adventurous. It reminds us that when Joe Jackson stops scolding the listener and starts simply swinging, he is nearly peerless. It is the most effortless thing on the record, which, ironically, makes it the hardest to ignore.

Released in 1991, The Reality of My Surroundings stands as the magnum opus of Fishbone, a band that defied every pigeonhole the music industry tried to trap them in. At the time of its release, the album represented a pivotal transition from the hyper-kinetic ska-punk of their youth toward a massive, sprawling fusion of heavy metal, funk, soul, all served with a heavy dose of social commentary. It was the moment Fishbone proved they weren’t just a “party band” from South Central Los Angeles, but a sophisticated musical powerhouse capable of capturing the chaotic pulse of Black America at the dawn of the 90s… and did so to the delight of discerning music fans from all cultures. This record remains one of my all time favorites to this day!

The brilliance of the record stems from the unique chemistry of its founding members, who met as teenagers in the late 1970s. Bused from their neighborhoods in South Central to the predominantly white Junior High schools of the San Fernando Valley, the band was forged in a crucible of cultural displacement.

Culturally, The Reality of My Surroundings arrived at a flashpoint. Released just a year before the 1992 L.A. Uprising, the album’s lyrical content—specifically in tracks like “Fight the Youth” and “So Many Millions“—felt prophetic. It addressed systemic racism, urban decay, and the loss of innocence with a frantic energy that matched the tension of the era. The album’s visual identity, including the iconic “Sunless Saturday” video directed by Spike Lee, cemented Fishbone as a vital voice in the “Black Rock” movement alongside peers like Living Colour and Bad Brains.

Upon its release, the album was a critical darling. Critics praised its dizzying variety, as it jumped from the gospel-infused “Everyday Sunshine” to the punishing metal riffs of “Pressure.” It was the band’s most successful commercial outing, peaking at #49 on the Billboard 200, and for a brief moment, it seemed Fishbone would become the biggest band in the world.

However, the industry struggled to market a band that was “too rock for R&B radio and too Black for rock radio.” While they influenced an entire generation of bands—from No Doubt to the Red Hot Chili Peppers—Fishbone never achieved the mainstream superstardom this album deserved. Decades later, The Reality of My Surroundings remains a masterpiece of maximalism, capturing a band at the absolute peak of their technical powers and creative fearlessness.

1991 is often cited as the “Year Rock Broke,” a seismic shift in the musical landscape where the excess of 80s hair metal was incinerated by the raw, earnest energy of the underground. The Reality of My Surroundings was released into an incredibly crowded and competitive field of landmark albums that redefined the mainstream.

Between August and September of 1991, a string of albums were released that would dominate the decade. Fishbone’s record arrived in April, acting almost as a herald for the chaotic genre-blurring to come. Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten, and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger all landed in late 1991. While Fishbone was from L.A., they shared the “alternative” DNA of these bands—a rejection of polish in favor of raw, visceral expression.

Fishbone’s closest sonic relatives, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released Blood Sugar Sex Magik in September. While both bands emerged from the same L.A. scene, the Chili Peppers found massive pop success with “Under the Bridge,” while Fishbone pushed further into avant-garde and heavy metal territory, which proved harder for radio to digest.

Fishbone were leaders in a specific cultural push often called the Black Rock Coalition. Along with Living Colour (who had released Time’s Up in 1990) and Bad Brains, they were fighting to reclaim rock music as a Black art form. In 1991, they were battling a record industry that was strictly segregated; labels didn’t know whether to put Fishbone in the “Urban” or “Rock” departments.

The tragedy of the era’s timing is that while 1991 opened the doors for “weird” music to become popular, it largely favored white grunge acts. Fishbone’s masterpiece was arguably more complex and musically daring than many of the multi-platinum grunge records of that year, but it lacked the narrow stylistic focus that the new MTV-driven “Alternative” market required for superstardom.

The album remains a testament to a time when the walls between metal, funk, punk, and soul were momentarily torn down, creating a sonic “surrounding” that was as beautiful as it was terrifying.

Also by 1991, the internal dynamic of Fishbone was a volatile mixture of unrivaled creative synergy and simmering psychological exhaustion. While The Reality of My Surroundings is their most cohesive musical statement, it was recorded at a time when the “brotherhood” was beginning to fray under the weight of their own intense ambitions and the pressures of the industry.

At this stage, the band operated as a true collective, which was both their greatest strength and their undoing. Unlike many bands with a single primary songwriter, Fishbone in 1991 was a “six-headed monster.” Every member was contributing at a world-class level. Kendall Jones was pushing the band toward complex, technical arrangements; Christopher Dowd was injecting soulful, sophisticated melodies; and Norwood Fisher was the rhythmic glue. This “all-in” approach meant that every song was a battleground. The sessions for Reality were famously intense, as the band struggled to fit their sprawling ideas into single tracks. You can hear this in the production—it is dense, layered, and occasionally “maximalist” to a fault.

The psychological toll of being “pioneers” cannot be overstated. By 1991, Fishbone had been touring relentlessly for nearly a decade. They were living in a strange limbo: they were the “idols” of bands like Jane’s Addiction and No Doubt, yet they were still sleeping in vans while their disciples moved into mansions.

“We were the band that everyone loved, but no one knew how to sell,” Norwood Fisher would later reflect.

This created a “us against the world” bunker mentality, but it also bred resentment. There was a growing divide between members who wanted to lean into the pop-sensibilities of “Everyday Sunshine” and those who wanted to lean into the darker, more aggressive “Pressure.”

Each song on the record acts as a different lens through which to view “the reality” of their surroundings—moving seamlessly from the pulpit to the mosh pit, and from the street corner to the conservatory.

“Fight the Youth” is the album’s mission statement. Its strength lies in its polyphonic density; the track opens with a wall of distorted guitars and horns that feel like an approaching riot. It’s a masterclass in tension, using a driving, metallic funk rhythm to deliver a biting critique of complacency.

“So Many Millions” is a haunting, mid-tempo groove that addresses the systemic cycle of poverty and violence. Its strength is its poignant restraint. While much of the album is loud and fast, this track breathes, allowing the lyrical weight of “trying to get out of the bucket” to truly land with the listener.

“Housework” is a frantic, ska-leaning workout that serves as a bridge to their earlier sound. Its strength is its playfulness, acting as a pressure valve for an album that otherwise deals with very heavy themes.

“Pressure” is where the band leans hardest into their hardcore punk and metal roots. It is a rhythmic endurance test, featuring “Fish” Fisher’s lightning-fast drumming and Angelo Moore’s manic vocal delivery. The song’s strength is its visceral energy—it sounds like a boiler about to explode, perfectly mirroring the internal stresses the band was feeling at the time.

“Everyday Sunshine” serves as the necessary counterweight. It is perhaps the most “pure” soul song the band ever recorded, featuring soaring gospel harmonies and a buoyant horn arrangement. Its strength is its sincerity; in an era defined by grunge’s irony and nihilism, Fishbone dared to release a track of unalloyed, technicolor hope.

“Naz-Tee May’en” is pure, uncut P-Funk worship. Its strength is its infectious rhythm; it’s a reminder that beneath the political anger and technical complexity, Fishbone was still one of the tightest dance bands on the planet.

“Sunless Saturday” is widely considered the album’s crown jewel. Its strength is its cinematic atmosphere. Kendall Jones’s guitar work here is legendary, utilizing a haunting, phased tone that perfectly captures the “gray” feeling of urban depression. The song builds to a frantic, apocalyptic crescendo that remains one of the most powerful moments in 90s rock.

In hindsight, The Reality of My Surroundings captures the exact moment before the band’s implosion. It is the sound of six brilliant, disparate personalities holding onto each other with white-knuckled intensity, producing something magnificent just before the centrifugal force of their individual brilliance pulled them apart.

With Wishing Moon, Wintersleep has reached the “wise elder” phase of their career, trading in the jagged, post-punk anxiety of their youth for a sound that feels like a well-worn corduroy jacket. Evolutionarily, they’ve moved past the stadium-sized ambitions of The Great Detachment and the dense, synth-laced layers of In the Land Of. They’ve settled into a groove that is remarkably steady—if a bit cozy for a band once known for musical volatility. It is the sound of a group that has stopped trying to reinvent the wheel and has instead decided to see how smoothly that wheel can roll.

The record plays out like a series of late-night conversations. Paul Murphy’s vocals have lost none of their distinctive, quiver-adjacent charm, but they are now cradled by arrangements that prioritize atmosphere over the raw, rhythmic punch of their early 2000s output. It’s the sound of a band that knows exactly how a Wintersleep song should work and is content to let the machinery hum. If Mahal Kita was about the beauty of connection, Winnower is about the labor of maintaining it. The production is crisp—courtesy of Halo-Halo Records—giving the intricate drum patterns and interlocking guitars enough room to breathe without suffocating the vocals. Ultimately, Winnower is the sound of a band that has stopped trying to outrun their influences and started trying to outgrow them by carving their own path. It’s a record for people who like their time signatures complex but their feelings simple and direct. It’s a triumphant return that suggests Hikes isn’t just a local Austin treasure anymore.

Formed in 2010 around the grit-and-honey vocals of frontman Willie Edwards, the band has spent over a decade blending blues, rock, folk, and world music into a sound that feels as heavy as a North Atlantic swell. While many trios stick to the basics, the Bandits frequently weave in lap steel guitars, double bass, and exotic percussion, (and now Stevie Watts on Hammond organ) earning them a reputation as one of the hardest-working and most sonically diverse live acts on the European circuit.

With Salt Roots, Willie and the Bandits have essentially decided to stop trying to be three different bands at once. Moving away from the more acoustic-leaning, “surf-folk” origins of their earlier work, this record finds the band leaning heavily into a beefier, more electrified sound. It is an evolution that feels less like a reinvention and more like a growth spurt; they haven’t lost their signature lap-steel slide or their percussive punch, but they’ve certainly found the “volume” knob and aren’t afraid to use it.

While the album offers plenty of highlights—The opener “Wheel Jane” and “King Kong” come to mind—“Know My Name” stands out to me as the definitive peak of the track list. It perfectly distills the band’s identity into a single, high-voltage package centering on a slide-guitar hook that is so thick and swaggering it practically demands you buy it a drink. The track also captures that rare intersection of bluesy soul and stadium-rock ambition without feeling like a hollow tribute act. Unlike some of the more experimental offerings that flirt with folk sensibilities, “Know My Name” is a statement of intent… It’s the sound of a band finally standing tall and, appropriately enough, making sure the audience knows exactly who they are.
